Solvang tasting rooms: a walkable wine day in the Danish town
The SB Wine List team ·
Solvang is best known for its Danish look: the town was founded in 1911 by Danish immigrants, as the City of Solvang tells it. For a wine day it has a simpler advantage. Most of its tasting rooms sit a few minutes' walk from each other, so you can park once and spend the afternoon on foot.
Here is what our listings show, counted from the facts each place publishes on its own website.
Sixteen rooms, one short walk
We list 24 places to taste wine in Solvang. Sixteen of them are tasting rooms in the downtown blocks, and all sixteen fit in less than half a kilometre from end to end, about a third of a mile. The other eight are estates and wineries on the roads outside town, between about one and five miles out.
That makes downtown Solvang one of the easiest wine days in the county to do without driving between stops. Pick three or four rooms, walk between them, and leave the car where it is. If someone in your group is driving home, our dog-friendly wine day and Los Olivos on foot pieces work the same way.
Walk-ins welcome at most of them
Ten of the sixteen downtown rooms say on their own sites that you can walk in without booking, among them Alma Rosa, Sevtap, Feliz Noche, Casa Cassara and Sanger. The others either recommend a reservation or do not say, so check the listing before a busy Saturday.
Across all 24 Solvang listings, 13 welcome walk-ins. The full list is on the walk-ins welcome in Solvang page.
Open into the evening
Several downtown rooms post hours past 5pm on at least one day of the week, which is unusual in wine country. By their posted hours:
- Cali Love Wine: until 10pm or 11pm on the days it opens, Thursday to Monday
- Sanger Wines: until 9:30pm Friday to Monday
- Alma Rosa: until 8pm Wednesday to Sunday
- Final Girl Wines: until 8pm on Friday and Saturday
Hours change with the season, so look at the day you plan on each listing. The open after 5pm in Solvang page keeps the current list.
Which wine region is downtown Solvang in?
The answer surprises people. Downtown Solvang sits inside the Los Olivos District, an American Viticultural Area established in 2016. Its federal boundary uses the Solvang map among the four topographic maps that define it, and it lies within the larger Santa Ynez Valley AVA. On our map, every downtown tasting room falls inside it.
Not every room pours wine from that district, though. A tasting room pours the winery's own wines, which can come from vineyards anywhere in the county. Each listing shows the grapes and regions the winery names. Of the estates outside town, two (Rusack and Piazza Family Wines) are in the neighbouring Ballard Canyon AVA.
Early in the week
Solvang is a good choice when other towns close. When we counted on October 4, 14 places with readable hours posted Monday hours and 9 posted Tuesday hours. The open on Monday and open on Tuesday pages show which ones. Our article on tasting on a Monday or Tuesday compares the towns.
Plan it
- Start on the [Solvang town page](/towns/solvang). It has the map and every listing with its hours.
- Build the walk in [My day](/my-day). Add your rooms, set the date, and the planner shows each stop's hours for that day and the walking time between them.
- Bringing a dog? One downtown room, Sanger Wines, says dogs are welcome; three places outside town say the same. See dog-friendly in Solvang.
A note on these numbers
Counts come from the 24 Solvang listings we hold today, each checked against the winery's own website. "Downtown" means the sixteen tasting rooms in the walkable blocks of the town centre. Places that post hours only as "by appointment" are listed but left out of the day counts rather than guessed at.
