Foxen Canyon Road links two wine regions. Its northern addresses carry a Santa Maria mailing address and sit in the Santa Maria Valley AVA. Its southern addresses carry a Los Olivos mailing address and sit in the Santa Ynez Valley AVA. We list 11 places with a Foxen Canyon Road address that welcome visitors, so one road can fill a whole day.

This plan is built from the facts we keep on each listing: address, posted hours and whether a place takes walk-ins or asks you to book. Hours change, so check the listing (and the winery) on the day.

The Santa Maria end

Listed from north to south, by where each sits on our map. All five have a Santa Maria address and sit inside the Santa Maria Valley AVA.

FOXEN has two separate tasting spots a few hundred numbers apart, The Shack at 7200 and the main tasting room at 7600. The Shack opens on weekends only.

The Los Olivos end

Continuing south. These six have a Los Olivos address. The first five sit in the Santa Ynez Valley AVA and the last in the Los Olivos District.

Street numbers do not run in one sequence along the road: 6020 (Riverbench) is at the Santa Maria end and 6200 (Fess Parker) at the Los Olivos end. Use the map, not the numbers.

One more note from the federal record: the legal boundary of the Ballard Canyon AVA begins where Foxen Canyon Road meets State Route 154.

Reading the hours

Seven of the 11 open every day by their posted hours: Riverbench, FOXEN (7600), Zaca Mesa, Demetria, Fess Parker, Koehler and Andrew Murray. On a Tuesday or Wednesday, those seven plus Tres Hermanas are your options. Rancho Sisquoc and The Shack are closed both days, and Petros opens Thursday to Sunday.

Booking is the rule rather than the exception here. Eight of the 11 recommend a reservation. Koehler is the one that tells us walk-ins are welcome. For Tres Hermanas and Petros we do not yet know the policy, and their listings say so rather than guessing.

Most places on the road close at 4pm or 5pm, so start early. Petros is the exception, open until 9pm on the days it opens.

Start from a ready-made day

In My day, pick the ready-made "Foxen Canyon Road" day. It holds three stops at the Santa Maria end, north to south: Riverbench, Rancho Sisquoc and FOXEN. Rancho Sisquoc closes Tuesday and Wednesday, so on those dates the planner will flag it against its posted hours.

To run the whole road, add Zaca Mesa, Demetria, Fess Parker, Koehler or Andrew Murray from the map. The planner checks each stop for the date you pick, routes the day in Google Maps, and shares the plan with a link.

On the road this fall

Three dates on our calendar happen on Foxen Canyon Road itself:

More are on events.

Before you go

  • This is a driving day. Plan for a designated driver or a booked ride.
  • Dogs are welcome at both FOXEN locations, Zaca Mesa, Demetria, Fess Parker and Koehler, by their own listings. The county list is at dog-friendly wineries.
  • For more around each end of the road, see the Santa Maria and Los Olivos pages.

Every address, hour and policy above comes from the source linked on each listing.
