Chardonnay is one of the easiest grapes to find in Santa Barbara County. Of the 198 places we list that take visitors, 97 name it among their wines. Here is what to expect in the glass, where it is poured, and which rooms make it simple to drop in.

What it is like

Chardonnay changes a lot with the hand that makes it. Some bottles are crisp and citrusy, others rich and buttery. At the table, think lobster, halibut, roast chicken or a creamy pasta.

What the federal record says

Of the federal AVA rules we have read for the county, only those for the Sta. Rita Hills name the grape. When the federal government established the Santa Rita Hills AVA in 2001, it described the area's cool, foggy climate and said Chardonnay and Pinot Noir were the main grapes grown there. The 2016 rule that expanded the boundary, by then spelled Sta. Rita Hills, listed both among the grapes in the added land.

That is as far as the record goes. We hold no planting figures, so the rest of this guide is about where you can taste it.

Where it is poured

By AVA, counting places located in the area or pouring its wine:

Many places pour from more than one AVA, so these overlap. Another 11, mostly in Santa Barbara, do not tie their wines to an AVA with us.

By town, Los Olivos leads with 24, then Lompoc with 20, Santa Barbara and Solvang with 12 each, Buellton with 11 and Santa Maria with 9.

Open every day, walk-ins welcome

Fifteen places that list Chardonnay say they open every day and welcome walk-ins. Hours are as each place posts them.

North of Los Olivos, Firestone and Koehler share the hills with three more estates that list Chardonnay and open every day, with a reservation recommended: Fess Parker Winery (10am–5pm), Demetria Estate (11am–5pm) and Zaca Mesa Winery (11am–4pm).

Into the evening

Besides Alma Rosa, Sanger and Jamie Slone above, these stay open to 7pm or later on at least one day:

Plan it

Chardonnay in the county lists every place on one page. Add a few stops to My day and the planner checks each one against its posted hours for your date. For a drive, Foxen Canyon Road and the Santa Maria Valley guide cover estates in the north; for a walk, try the Funk Zone or Solvang.

A note on these numbers

We counted on October 13, 2026, from our approved listings, each checked against the winery's own website. A place counts when Chardonnay is on its list of wines and it takes visitors; 11 more producers list the grape but have no tasting room open to the public. "Pours an AVA's wine" means its own sources show wine from there, not that every bottle is. "Walk-ins welcome" and the hours are as each place posts them. The federal facts come from the two rules listed below.
