One day across the Santa Ynez Valley: Santa Ynez, Solvang, Buellton and Los Olivos
The SB Wine List team ·
This plan covers four Santa Ynez Valley towns: Santa Ynez, Solvang, Buellton and Los Olivos. Between them we list 107 places that take visitors. Of those, 40 open seven days a week by their posted hours, and 13 of the 40 also tell us walk-ins are welcome.
Those 13 are the backbone of the day below, because they work on any date without a booking. Everything else is an add-on you can reserve. Hours change, so check the listing (and the winery) on the day.
Where the daily, walk-in places are
- Santa Ynez: Gainey Vineyard, 3950 E. Highway 246: daily 11am–5pm, last tasting 4pm.
- Solvang: Kaena at The Ranch, 800 E. Highway 246: daily 11am–5pm, last tasting starts 4:30pm. Blackjack Ranch, 2205 Alamo Pintado Road: daily 11am–4:30pm, and it asks you to call ahead on Tuesday and Wednesday. Alma Rosa Winery & Vineyards, 1623 Mission Dr.: Monday and Tuesday 12pm–6pm, Wednesday to Sunday 12pm–8pm. Sanger Wines, 1584 Mission Dr.: Tuesday to Thursday 12pm–7pm, Friday to Monday 11:30am–9:30pm.
- Los Olivos: eight, most of them on Grand Avenue. Evan's Ranch, Larner, Refugio Ranch, Saarloos + Sons and Solminer are on Grand Avenue; Blair Fox Cellars is on Alamo Pintado Avenue; Firestone Vineyard is on Zaca Station Road and Koehler Wine Estate on Foxen Canyon Road.
- Buellton: none of the Buellton places we list is both open daily and walk-in by its listing. Its three seven-day places, all on Santa Rosa Road, recommend a reservation (below).
A day, in four parts
Late morning, out of town. Gainey in Santa Ynez and Kaena on the Solvang stretch of Highway 246 both open at 11am every day and take walk-ins. In Los Olivos, Koehler opens at 10am and Firestone at 11am, also daily and walk-in. Pick one or two of these for the first stops. All four close at 5pm, so they belong early in the day.
Midday, the Solvang side. Blackjack Ranch on Alamo Pintado Road is daily and walk-in, with a call ahead on Tuesday and Wednesday. In town, Alma Rosa and Sanger Wines open at noon or earlier.
Afternoon, Los Olivos on foot. Five walk-in rooms on Grand Avenue post seven-day hours: Evan's Ranch, Larner, Refugio Ranch, Saarloos + Sons and Solminer. They close between 5pm and 6pm. Park once and walk between them; our piece on Los Olivos on foot has the full street.
Evening, back in Solvang. Sanger Wines is open until 9:30pm from Friday to Monday and 7pm the rest of the week. Alma Rosa's Solvang room is open until 8pm from Wednesday to Sunday. Both take walk-ins. For every late option in town, see open after 5pm in Solvang.
If you book ahead
Plenty of the valley's seven-day places recommend or require a reservation, and booking opens them up:
- Buellton, on Santa Rosa Road: Alma Rosa Winery & Vineyards (estate), daily 10am–4pm; Peake Ranch, daily 11am–5pm; and Vega Vineyard & Farm, daily, open until 8pm on Friday and Saturday. All three recommend a reservation.
- Santa Ynez: Sunstone Winery (daily 11am–5pm, last seating 4pm) and The Brander Vineyard recommend one; McKinney Family Vineyards is by reservation only.
- Solvang: Lincourt Vineyards and Buttonwood Farm & Vineyard recommend one.
- Ballard Canyon: the two places we list inside the Ballard Canyon AVA, Rusack and Piazza Family Wines, both carry Solvang addresses and taste by appointment. Our piece on Ballard Canyon and its Syrah covers them.
Order the stops in My day
We have not put drive times in this piece. Distances between these towns depend on the order you choose and the route you take, and a guess would only mislead.
Instead, add the stops you want to My day and set the date. The planner checks each stop against its posted hours for that day, flags any that will be closed, and routes the whole day in Google Maps so you can see the real drive between stops before you go. You can share the plan with a link.
Getting home safely
This is a driving day across several towns. Plan for a designated driver who is not tasting, or book a ride or a driver for the day before you start. The walking afternoon in Los Olivos and the evening in Solvang do not change how you get back.
Before you go
- Each town has its own page with today's hours: Santa Ynez, Solvang, Buellton and Los Olivos.
- Walk-in lists by town: Solvang, Buellton and Los Olivos.
- Travelling with a dog? Kaena, Sanger, Koehler and Evan's Ranch from the walk-in list above say dogs are welcome. The county list is at dog-friendly wineries.
- The guide collects our walking and weekday plans in one place.
Every address, hour and policy above comes from the source linked on each listing.
