Harvest 2026 started early in Santa Barbara County
The SB Wine List team ·
The 2026 harvest in Santa Barbara County came in early. In August, the Santa Barbara Independent reported that it was shaping up as the earliest wine grape harvest the county had recorded, with growers in several AVAs saying they had never picked this soon.
Here is what was reported, in short, and where to find harvest events on our calendar this fall.
What growers reported
The cause, as growers described it to the Independent, sits in the winter. Warm, summer-like weather in January and February woke the vines from dormancy close to a month ahead of schedule. After that, the growing season itself was described as fairly even. The early start carried through to picking.
The effect was not the same everywhere. The cooler regions, the Sta. Rita Hills and the Santa Maria Valley, were the furthest ahead. Warmer inland spots, Ballard Canyon, Los Olivos and Happy Canyon among them, were running closer to their usual pace.
A few specifics from the report:
- Will Henry of Lumen Wines, with 15 Santa Maria Valley harvests behind him, called it the earliest he had seen. He expected to finish by mid-September.
- Ernst Storm of Storm Wines said it was the earliest harvest in his 20 years, with yields down as much as 40 percent from normal.
- Wynne Sargeant of Brave & Maiden set August 25 for the first Sauvignon Blanc pick, about two weeks earlier than usual.
- Peter Stolpman said his crop was about 25 percent lighter than normal.
The headline's other half matters too: because the warmer areas were running closer to their usual pace, the season overall could end nearer to a normal finish than its start suggested.
What a lighter crop means for any particular wine, we cannot say yet, and we will not guess. When wineries post release notes for the 2026 vintage, those are the place to read about it.
